The South West Africa Wildlife Preservation &
Research Institute is located on Farm
Kanabeam in the South West of the Republic of
Namibia. Covering more than 96 square miles
of untouched Kanabeam plains and mountains,
the area is home to a number of large
mammals, including the endangered mountain
zebra, gemsbok, greater kudu, eland, leopard,
and cheetah. A variety of smaller species and
colorful and varied bird life complements the
rich, multifaceted natural beauty of the area.
Closed from 1993 to hunting, agriculture,
mining and other human activities, Kanabeam
has become a truly unspoiled wilderness,
where wildlife and natural habitats are
treasured, protected and preserved in
accordance with sound, effective and humane
management practices. Kanabeam includes a
small progressive, self-sustaining human
community consisting of permanent staff,
workers, students, and volunteers. A small
medical clinic provides basic health care.
Kanabeam is proof that humans and wildlife
can coexist in harmony and benefit by each
others presence.
